In Jube 1950 75,000 soldiers from the North Koreans People's Army across the 38th parallel boundary which was between the soviet-backed Democractic Peoples Republic of Korea to the south. This was the first invasion that was considered the first military action of the Cold War. since the beginning of the 20th century Korea had been apart of the Japanese empire, also WW2 fell to the Americans and the soviets to decide what should be done with their enemies mpelial possessions. in au gust 1945, two young aides at the State Department split Korean Peninsula along with 38th parallel Russians occupied area North of the line and the United States occupied the area of the South. By the en for the decade, two new states had formed on the peninsula. There were two Dictators, the Souths anti-communist dictator was Sygmen Khee,(1875-1968) and he enjoyed the support of the American government. The Norths communist dictator was Kim II Sung,(1912-1994) and he enjoyed the slightly more enthusiastic support of the Soviets.
Neither dictator wanted to stay on their sides of the 38th parallel, nearly about 10,000 North and South Korean soldiers were killed in Battle. Many people feared this was the first step in a communist campaign. president Truman wanted to continue to help the Koreans because if they didn't the Soviets would start to take over. The fight on the peninsula was a symbol of the global struggle between good and evil. the U.S. Needed their troops for a war againer communism. At first war was about getting the communists out of South Korea but North Korea's army was well disiplined and trained. A major constant threat was diseases and illness, and President Truman and General Douglas MacArthur decided on a new set of war aims. War to liberate the North from the communists was a success especially the assault at Inchan. that pushed North Korea back to their side of the 38th parallel. Chinese leader Mao Zeding sent troops to keep away from the Yah Boundry. president Truman looked for a way to prevent war with the Chinese, but MacArthur did all he could to provoke it. On April 11 fired general for insubordination. Truman and his new commanders started peace talks at Panmunjom Fighting did continue along the 38th peninsula. After 2 years of negotiations, the adveravies signed Armtice on July 27, 1953. Along with that POWs could stay where they liked, new boundaries near the 38th gave Siuth Korea and extra 1,500 area of land. 2 mile-wide "demilitarized zone." By the end of the war, 5 million people died, 10% Korean civilians 40,000 Americans died, 100,000 wounded. |
