CultureSome say the Cold War had an effect in American culture, others say it didn’t. Either way, the Cold War must of had some effect, because it did influence some of the culture and society. From the civil rights movement to survivalism, from Hollywood to the universities. One example being the nuclear threat, the Communist threat brought what is now called the National Defense Education Act. The Cold War left it mark on activities ranging from art to poetry to movies to comic books. Some sports events became particularly prominent venues for rivalry.
Which began with the London Olympics in 1948. The Cold War was also used as a propaganda tool, national security agencies encouraged Hollywood to make anti-communist movies. These movies helped spark patriotism but also raised suspicion of communist activity in America. What was meant to be an American in the ideological played out through movie theaters, books, television, religion, college campuses and almost any venue open to cultural expression. Although, visiting artists, traveling exhibitions, and other cultural exchanges both informal and formal, sometimes helped ease Cold War tensions. Americans and Soviets both viewed popular culture as an important weapon in the struggle to win influence in Europe during the Cold War. They both thought that increasing the vitality of its culture could play a key role in winning support for their sides. Americans felt that Europeans share the same tastes of American elites more than they would respond to popular culture. The Soviets were alarmed of the spread of American culture, and tried to promote their own culture. Culture was both affected and used to gain support throughout this war from beginning to the end. |
